The Leafs nominate Morgan Rielly for the Bill Masterton Trophy. The Hurricanes lose Lack to a scary injury. The Lightning will just not quit.
A player on each team is nominated by the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association for the Bill Masterton Trophy. The award goes to the player who, “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey”. The Maple Leafs announced this morning that defenceman Morgan Rielly will be their nominee.
Babcock on Rielly's Masterton nomination: "First time I've ever had a 23-year-old [up for] that award. I'm not judging, just the first time"

There is a disagreement with this choice among the fanbase because other players on the team have had breakout years. Nazem Kadri has reached 30 goals, Tyler Bozak finally hits 50 points, and Freddie Andersen has gotten them to this point. I can understand the rationale in nominating him. This season has seen young defenceman with increased responsibility and critique as well as having to battle through a high ankle sprain. Let’s be honest, Rielly will most likely not even win. However, being nominated is a victory in itself and will be a great confidence boost down the stretch.
Hurricanes in Lack
Has anyone been paying attention to the Carolina Hurricanes? They’re doing the same thing they did last year with this end of the season hot streak. The team has points in their last 10 games and now sit only four back of the final wild card spot. The team took a hit in the net last night as goaltender Eddie Lack had to be stretchered off the ice. In overtime, Andreas Athanasiou scored the game winner, but unfortunately, collided with Lack after being pushed by Victor Rask. It was a scary situation as the medical staff rushed over to Lack who was motionless on the ice for a period of time. Lack has had his fair share of injuries this season and to be expected, his play has been affected by them. Luckily this injury is not another concussion but just a neck sprain.
Steve Yzerman will most likely go down as one of the greatest General Managers in NHL history. This team sold at the deadline trading away Brian Boyle, Valtterri Filppula, and Brian Bishop. This team has gone through it’s fair share of injuries in recent history down the middle. They even came back from a 4-1 deficit last night to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 in OT. You can’t deny it, the Tampa Bay Lightning will not quit. Many had them out of the playoffs this year because of their slow start and injury to number one centre Steven Stamkos. At the moment, the playoffs is a possibility one and two points back of the second wild card spot and division spot respectively. Once Stamkos returns to the line-up, the East Conference playoff race could be dialed up to another level.
