Are you not entertained?! Leafs Victory! 4-2 against the Buffalo Sabres. Did I mention that the game was IN Buffalo? Curses smerses, this team is on fire! The win tonight almost makes you completely forget how the NHL is screwing the fans out of not going to the Olympics! Alright, maybe not entirely. According to MoneyPuck, the Leafs have a 99% chance of reaching the P-word. The rest of this week is going to get even more stressful as the team will have a chance to clinch if certain things happen. For now, enjoy the reaction, enjoy this team. All they do is break records.
There was a game back in November, back in the good ol days when Jonas Enroth was the back-up. The Leafs lost the game in the first period allowing Calgary to score three times. It’s nice to understand how it feels to be on the other side of that. The game was over after the first period, and it only took 43 seconds.
Connor Brown gets on the forecheck and forces McCabe to turn over the puck to Nazem Kadri. Before that, Uncle Leo fell in front of the net which you could consider frustrating. Gets up and is the recipient of a Kadri pass which he taps in to make it 1-0. Along the blue line, Nylander makes sick play to get the puck past C.J. Smith and feeds Auston Matthews in the slot. Snipe over Lehner’s glove and its 2-0. Bozak wins the face-off and the puck gets to JVR who settles it down with his skate. Quick shot and it’s 3-0. That was the end of Robin Lehner after allowing 3 goals on 5 shots.
Also, should give some love to Kadri after scoring his 31st goal. Kadri was having a tough time in front of the net against Girgensons, but is left alone momentarily. Gets the pass from Marner and sends it through the 5-hole of Nilsson to make it 4-1. The London native had some funny words for Ristolainen after that, I’ll leave you to decipher what they were.
Before I get into the actual grease of the game, I’ll have to get into that shorthanded goal. First off, it was shorthanded, never ok to allow a shorthanded goal. The puck is send out into the neutral zone and Ryan O’Rielly picks it up. Gardnier (it’s always him) is caught flat footed, and O’Rielly gets past him to the net and scores. Would’ve loved Andersen to have that one, but they may have been the 3rd or 4th shot he saw that game.
The Sabres were rated S for salty tonight. At first, they were playing with an edge. A couple wacks and slashes here and there, most of which were from Evander Kane. But after 3-0, it was getting dirty. Kane clipped Andersen in the head which it could be argued that it was by accident, but some practice these things to make it look accidental. Eichel who big timed Leafs fans last game with that goal celebration, thought it was ok to hit Marner from behind right in the numbers. It’s a bittersweet thing to be honest. As much as it’s great to see the Leafs get in their head, it’s also worrying that someone might try to be a hero in a game like this and do something stupid.
Matthews broke two records with that single goal. With 67 points, the first overall pick is the leader in rookie points passing Peter Ihnacak’s total set in 1983. Additionally, this was Matthews’ fifth game in a row with a goal which ties the rookie record set in 1942 by Gaye Stewart. Nylander and Marner were able to tally their 60th points of the season. The Leafs are the second team in NHL history to have three rookies with 60+ points along with the Quebec Nordiques in 1981! To keep it going, Kadri has 60 points as well after his goal and assist tonight leaving the Leafs with four players to score that high. JVR has 58 points, and with 4 games left could easily reach 60 points as well. This season will go down as one of if not the greatest seasons in NHL history.

So, do we build Matthews a statue on Legends Row right away, or wait until the offseason? #tmltalk
